Washington Post Endorses Mike McMenamin

Saturday, October 27, 2007; Page A14

"Arlington County is the bluest of blue counties.  The five-member County Board has been a Democratic Party club since 1999.  Arlington voters should shake things up…with Michael T. McMenamin.  With his impressive knowledge of issues large and small, Mr. McMenamin would push the board to think through its decisions." ...

Renewing the Call for Responsive Government

Last year, The Washington Post called Mike McMenamin…
"[A]n engaging candidate who has raised some valid concerns about whether the county is threatening its financial health… ."

and warned that…

"Democrats, who dominate Arlington government, would do well not to ignore the concerns raised by Mr. McMenamin."

Those concerns are still shared today. That’s why Mike is renewing the call this year for responsible government in Arlington, and is asking for your support this November.

Putting Neighborhood Priorities First!

Photo: Mike and his familyAs a 13-year resident of Arlington, recent president of the Maywood Community Association, and an active member of Arlington's Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission (FAAC), I know the potential of this community. Like my neighbors, I've watched in frustration as the current County Board members have become increasingly divorced from the realities that we as county residents face each day by adopting policies that show less and less concern for our neighborhoods. Street repairs. Zoning. Wasteful projects that only benefit a few special interests. We need to end the days of rubber-stamp governance and return diversity and debate to the Board.

As your representative on the County Board, I'll ask the tough questions that Walter Tejada and the other Board members would rather avoid:

  • Why are Arlington County capital projects for fire stations, libraries and parks so far behind schedule and over budget?
  • Why are Arlington County taxes increasing faster than other places in Northern Virginia?
  • Why do we need to raise existing taxes and institute special taxes or fees for projects that should already be paid for out of the County’s general fund?
  • Why does Arlington impose tighter zoning restrictions on single-family homes?
  • Where is the accountability on transportation?
  • Why does Arlington fail to provide adequate parking in residential neighborhoods and retail areas?

Through my role on the FAAC and in my own neighborhood, I’m connected to the people of Arlington County. I'm a homeowner with two children in public schools, and I know the issues facing our County. I'm independent of the political machine that has controlled Arlington for too many years, and I am not tied to the expensive, failed policies of the past.

As an elected member of the County Board, I'll work with our neighborhood leaders and the Civic Federation to stand up for Arlington’s neighborhoods and taxpayers. I will not turn a deaf ear to your ideas or a blind eye to your concerns.

I ask for your support this year and your vote on November 6th. With your help, we can launch a new era of open, transparent government in Arlington, and begin to make our County government respond to the needs of its citizens once again.
